Emergency Ambulatory Care

An SVS veterinarian is on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year to help deal with time-critical animal health emergencies. We know that your animals health sometimes requires rapid response to ensure positive outcomes, and we’re always ready to make sure that happens.

If you’re unsure of whether your situation qualifies as an emergency please see our WHEN TO CALL page.

*During Emergency hours calls are forwarded to a voice-messaging system and the on-call veterinarian is notified immediately.

Diagnosis & Treatment of Illness

SVS has decades of experience diagnosing equine disease and illness, and prescribing proper treatment. We conduct physical exams, lab diagnostics, radio/sonic imaging and we proscribe medicine, treatments, and therapy. And we make sure our clients are well informed so they can be prepared.

Veterinarians provide consultation and information so you know what you’re dealing with and how to deal with it.

*We strongly recommend that all animal owners keep a supply of painkillers on hand for emergencies. Flunixin(common brands; Banamine, Prevail) is a good choice and an important part of your barn’s first aid kit.

Wellness Checkups

SVS recommends every patient receives a yearly Wellness exam. Just like for you, checkups ensure you have a proactive position when it comes to health. Especially when it comes to disease, early diagnosis can make all the difference.

We conduct a physical examination, analysis, check vaccination status, dental health, and run all tests necessary to make an analysis. Then we provide an onsite consultation so you know everything you need to know.

Vaccinations

Vaccinations can be a critical part of animal and herd health. Because every animal has different needs, (and every barn, owner, state, species, etc) veterinary vaccination can be a complex business. SVS customizes our recommendations for every patient, taking their exposure, health, environment, and more into consideration. A backyard pony may not need the same things as a show horse, and we know all the ins and outs to make sure they’re protected no matter what. We will help you monitor schedules with regular updates and reminders.

SVS also provides specific protocols and monitoring for pregnent/bred mares, as these animals often pose more complex

Dentistry

Horses’ teeth require regular attention. SVS recommends a yearly dental exam (usually part of our standard wellness checkup). Their dental health can effect how they eat, how they utilized the feed you provide them, and overall health. We inspect horses for loose, broken, or misaligned teeth and treat accordingly. Floating (removing the enamel points from teeth) is also an important part of tooth care that SVS offers.

Lameness examination

A lame horse is an unhappy horse (not to mention their owner). SVS will conduct a through examination, including observing their gait, manual palpation, flexion tests, and if necessary we will take radiology or ultrasound images to further investigate. We also use diagnostic nerve blocks to localize the source of pain.

Our decades of experience in professionaly evaluating lameness helps us properly spot causes, and then proscribe appropriate treatment.

Purchase Exams

Purchase/sale exams are a necessary part of animal ownership and equine practice. SVS knows how to streamline this process and provide the security you need to make good financial decisions.

Communication of results with buyers and sellers is easier than ever thanks to modern advances in digital radiography. SVS examines animals onsite and can transmit results in almost real time, electronically sharing patient information with necessary parties. Not only that, if the first images don’t produce conclusive results we can try again with no delay. It’s a huge improvement in the process that makes buying or selling horses easier than it’s ever been.

Radiology/Ultrasound

Digital radiology is a game-changer, and SVS makes full use of new technological advances in the area of x-ray imaging. We use cutting-edge imaging equipment that makes us more efficient and effective, and we can still run film images if you need them.

Ultrasound is a similarly important and evolving technology, though both have their up and downsides. When SVS started ultrasound was still being integrated into ambulatory veterinary work, and we’ve adapted as the industry has changed. Initially, it was used mostly for pregnancy exams, but now we use it for all manner of diagnostics. Not only that, but our equipment is battery powered so it can go anywhere a vet can go.

Health Certificates

Health certification, whether interstate, intrastate, or international can be complicated. SVS has the logistics worked out. Electronic certification is a seamless process that makes all of our lives easier. We enter patient information directly into relevant databases, so that everyone is cleared for landing. We also print and mail certifications when needed.
